Recharged and Reconnected: My Inspiring Live Painting Retreat Experience

I Just came back from an incredible three-day live painting retreat in Charleston South Carolina and I'm buzzing with inspiration and creative energy!

I knew it would be a great experience, but I honestly didn't anticipate just how impactful it would be. It was so much more than just a few days of painting; it was a deep dive into the world of live artistry, a chance to connect with fellow artists, and a powerful reminder of why I love the live painting industry.

The setting: The Beautiful William Aiken house downtown Charleston SC

I stayed at the beautiful Emiline Hotel on Church st.

From the moment I arrived, the atmosphere was electric and filled with the vibrant energy of fellow live painters, all passionate about their craft. We instantly connected over shared experiences, swapping stories about gigs, challenges, creepy guests, and the sheer joy of creating art in front of a live audience. The sense of community was overwhelming in the best possible way. It was a reminder that even though we often work solo, we're all part of something bigger.

This retreat wasn't just about painting; it was a masterclass in the business and art of live painting. Layover events had curated an amazing program packed with educational sessions, hands-on workshops, and insightful panel discussions. We delved into everything from technical skills and color theory to marketing strategies and client communication. I soaked up every bit of information like a sponge, eager to implement these new ideas into my own practice.

The panel discussions were particularly inspiring. Hearing from established live painters about their journeys, their struggles, and their successes was incredibly motivating. They shared valuable insights into navigating the industry, building a brand, and staying true to your artistic vision. It was a reminder that perseverance and passion are key to a successful career in live painting and most importantly, family comes first, then business.

The workshops were so valuable. We attended workshops From Plein air painting in oils by Stephanie Terragrossa;  Live fashion sketching with a live model -Chloe Campbell and portrait painting workshop with Heather Wolfe. I was greatly challenged in the portrait workshop as it was in acrylic - a medium I haven't hardly touched for portraits since college!

We had the opportunity to learn new techniques, experiment with different mediums, and push the boundaries of our knowledge of color theory. I particularly enjoyed the workshop by Stephanie Terragrossa who brought us back to working with a limited color palette and mixing our own colors. I was finding beautiful mint greens appearing on my palette that I hardly ever see!  We were all painting with our easels on the lawn of the beautiful William Aiken house downtown Charleston and chose a scene to work from live.  It opened up a whole new reminder to slow down, take the time to think about color - versus using paint directly from the tubes.

Beyond the formal programming, the informal connections made during the retreat were invaluable. Sharing meals, walks & conversations about art and life, visiting local galleries and creating bonds that I know will last a lifetime. I've come away from this retreat not just with refreshed skills and knowledge, but also with a network of supportive and inspiring friends.

The Food served was the cherry on top! We were so spoiled with a luxurious plated meal after a long day of workshops and panels. I ordered the short ribs paired with a beautiful Pinot Noir.

Perhaps one of the best surprises of the event was finding our seat at dinner by finding our hand drawn portrait by the talented Jessica Sebok from Cloud Studio agency.

This retreat has reignited my passion for live painting and given me the tools and confidence to take my art to the next level. It was a reminder of the power of community, the importance of continuous learning, and the sheer joy of creating. I'm so grateful for this experience and can't wait to put everything I've learned into practice.

If you're a live painter looking for inspiration, connection, and education, I highly recommend attending a retreat like this. It's an investment in yourself and your art that will pay dividends for years to come.

Thank You Layover events, Chloe & team, Stephanie, Heather and the incredible panel of speakers who presented and filled us with inspiration & connection to continue making this industry elevated and needed.

The next retreat is happening - we just don’t know when or where - we just know it is going to be traveling!

With gratitude,

Leanne
